FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What kind of training do you offer?

As a specialist dog trainer in Wigan, I offer both obedience training and behaviour modification training to suit dogs of all ages in a variety of packages. For further information, please visit my blog page.

Do you work with aggressive dogs?

Yes I do work with aggressive dogs. I have a proven system of training that I was taught by an American dog trainer and behaviourist. This system is like no other in  that it completely eradicates any aggression from the dog, leaving them social and happy.

Do you offer scent work training?

Yes I do. Please go to the Training Packages section for further information, or alternatively either fill out a contact form with any questions that you would like answering or even better just give me a call.

How long does the training take?

That depends on what package you purchase. The basic package is 4 sessions spaced over 4 weeks, for example. The Aggressive Dog package can take between 3 and 6 sessions depending upon the mindset of the dog and progression of the training.

Are you insured?

Yes. With Pet Business Insurance.

How much do you charge?

That depends on the package that you require. Please fill in the Contact Form or feel free to call me to discuss your needs. You can also view what’s on offer in the Packages section.

What if my dog does not like treats?

No problem. Play and praise is a great way to reward dogs.

How will my dog benefit from the training?

Your dog will benefit in the following ways: 1. The training will put you in a leadership position in your dog’s eyes, and that will give them confidence. 2. Dogs are animals that would normally live in a hierarchical society with a role to fulfill within that. The training process gives them a job to do and so satisfies that innate drive. 3. All dogs need to be stimulated and challenged mentally for them to be balanced and happy. The training process will accomplish this important factor. 4. You dog will have off lead freedom!

How much time per day do i need to train my dog?

Both you and your dog will require a minimum of 30 minutes training each day to formulate new ways of behaving. The training journey is a mutual learning process for you both, where you will learn to interact with one another in a organic process that will result in you becoming a skillful handler worthy of your dog’s trust. If you require information on how the training can be incorporated in to your daily schedule just ask when booking your training package.

When can training begin?

Positive reinforcement training begins with puppies when they have had their inoculations, about 10weeks old. For e-collar training the rule we follow is once the dog is 5 months of age or over.

What kind of behavioural problems do you deal with?

All of them. Each dog will be assessed on its individual merits and a solution will be formulated that will suit the needs of the dog and the owner.

How many sessions before I see an improvement?

You will see an improvement immediately and that will be built on over the following sessions and beyond.

Can you come to my house?

Yes. I offer private 1 on 1 sessions that begin in your home. I also have an indoor training facility that I use when required.

Do you work with all dog breeds?

Yes.

What if my dog doesn’t respond to your methods?

It is common in the world of dog training to have to utilise various techniques of training for different dogs and their aptitudes. I have not yet failed to communicate to a dog effectively.

Will i need any special equipment?

You may do, and that will be determined by the type training that you undertake. This will be discussed in detail prior to booking any training packages.

General Training Equipment

Collars

I prefer to use a flat collar in general training as it promotes reasonable control and does not over stress the dogs neck. However there are certain times when this type of collar is inaffective and I can advise and supply collars that promote better control over your dog.

6ft Lead

This should be made of material (not chain) and have a clip to fasten it on to the collar. It should not be a slip or check lead and be long enough to gain some distance from your dog when practicing new exercises.

30ft (10m) lead

This type of lead will be used when we start with distance training exercises outside, such as recall. It is recommended that one should be used until the time comes when  you can be certain that your dog come back to you when called.

Treat Bag

In all of our training packages we rely heavily on food rewards, so it is important to have a way of carrying them around efficiently. A treat bag with a shoulder strap is best so you can easily slip it over you clothes all year round.

Training Bed

This is an essential piece of kit when training your dog. They are used for many training scenarios, including command training as well as impluse and behaviour work. They come in a variety of sizes, are available online and are quite inexpensive, yet indespensible.

Toys

Your dog will enjoy the training process but they will like it even more when they are rewarded with a play with their favourite toy within the sessions.
